Competition Team Info
Emerald City Dance Complex’s (ECDC) competitive dance team provides an elevated training program for dancers interested in taking their skills to the next level. We help dancers shift their focus from recreational dance to a more goal-oriented and focused program, in a positive, supportive, fun, and transparent atmosphere.
Our competitive dance program shapes dancers to develop a strong character, work ethic, discipline, respect for self and others, a holistic view
of health (mental, physical, emotional and even spiritual), to learn to set goals, journal, be intentional and to work towards self improvement.

How Do You Get Started with Competition Teams?
For competition teams, dancers 10 years and older are required to go through an audition for team placement. These occur in June and July. Dates and times for upcoming auditions are listed below. Prior to auditions, there will be a new parent meeting (date listed below) and a form to fill out with the dancers' information, experience and interests for competition teams.
Auditions: What to Expect
Auditions are intended to illustrate to ECDC Directors and Coaches the dancer's current abilities and showcase their potential for growth. The audition process informs team selection, placing dancers with the teams that will push them to the next level.
Auditions will include a ballet warm up, jazz progressions, improv and hip hop choreography. All dancers will be expected to audition through all styles, even
if it’s not listed as an interest or something they have experience in.
Team Levels
There are different team levels dancers will be considered for, based on age and/or experience. The teams are as follows:
-
Arise - Beginner
-
Crescendo - Beginner/Intermediate
-
Fluorescence - Intermediate
-
Effloresce - Advanced
Team Selections
Dancers have an opportunity to compete on a variety of dance teams based on interest, experience, and placement. Each team level will offer routines in various styles including Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Theater Jazz, to name a few.
During the season, including summer session, dancers are required to train in Ballet, Acro and Technique classes for all teams. Technique is a strength and conditioning class geared toward all genres of dance technique. Dancers 10 years and older will take two ballet classes, one technique and one Acro class a week. Depending on their team placement, they will also be required to train in other genre-specific classes as stated below:
Team weekly technique class requirements are as follows:
-
Jazz: Ballet, Jazz, Technique, Acro
-
Jazz Funk: Ballet, Jazz,Technique, Hip Hop, Acro
-
Contemporary/Lyrical: Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Technique, Acro
-
Hip Hop: Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Technique, Acro
-
Musical Theater: Ballet, Jazz, Musical Theater, Technique, Acro
-
Ballet: Ballet, Technique, Acro
In addition to their weekly classes, dancers will be required to attend weekly rehearsals for their chosen teams. These are built into the class schedule, starting in the fall.
Dancers will learn their team choreography for the season, starting the last two weeks of August (August 19-30). We ask that if interested in teams, you please keep these dates open from travel plans, if possible. The choreography schedule typically comes out in July after teams are finalized. If a dancer already has plans during these dates, we ask you to let us know as soon as you can.

All Team Requirement
All dancers 10 years and older will be required to participate on the All Team Production, which consists of a combination of Jazz, Contemporary,
Hip Hop and/or Jazz Funk choreography. This is intended to build camaraderie and connection as a team.
Solos, Duos & Trios
-
Solos: At ECDC, we believe that all dancers should be allowed to do a solo. It provides dancers an opportunity to get personalized, one-on-one training and instruction by a coach who can expand on the dancer's strengths and provide growth where needed. This is not required, but an opportunity for all dancers.
-
Duos/Trios: Dancers may be selected by ECDC Directors and Coaches based on an appropriate pairing of skills and abilities. This is not required, but an opportunity for dancers, if chosen.
Interested in Hip Hop Only?
We have a team for you. Please email us in advance of auditions to let us know. Dancers will still be required to attend the full audition, but this will provide us with additional information about the dancer.

Team Announcements
After auditions, ECDC Directors will send an offer letter to the dancer informing
of their team level and routine placements. The letter will also outline team requirements to help inform the dancers decision.

If a dancer is placed on the Effloresce team (advanced level), they are expected
to attend additional convention competitions and possibly a summer team event, like nationals, intensives, etc.
Our competition teams will compete in 5-6 competitions each season, typically running from January-May. Dancers will also be given the opportunity to perform
at non-competitive events, like dance festivals and showcases, in addition to
required competition and conventions, throughout the season. These additional performance dates and times will be laid out with as much advance notice as possible.
